Capoeira Angola

Teacher, Marrio & Zoe

Weekly on Tuesdays at 7:00pm | Co-ed

The Afro-Brazilian martial art, Capoeira, is often described as being a dance, a fight, or a game. Those who take note of the graceful, rhythmic, continuous movements of Capoeira see it as a dance. Those who focus on the attacks, escapes and counterattacks hidden within those graceful movements see it as a fight. Those who appreciate the relaxed attitude and playful nature of those involved, see Capoeira as a game. Capoeira Angola is all these things and more. Indeed, Capoeira is a multidisciplinary art form containing life-lessons in each of its components: history, philosophy, music, movement, and technique.

About Marrio & Zoe

I began my love affair with Capoeira Angola in 2005 in Austin, Texas. After training for 2 years with Free Angola Capoeira Society in Austin, Texas, I moved to Houston where I continued to train with Kalunga N’golo. Over the past 11 years, I have participated in community demonstrations at the SHAPE center, and various performances throughout the Austin and Houston communities. I have especially enjoyed collaborating with local organizations such Break Free Hip Hop school, and Sankofa Academy to teach Capoeira Angola to the youth. Over the years I have had the opportunity to train with various masters from the U.S. and Brazil, allowing me to experience different favors of this dynamic art. Through Capoeira Angola I have found community, self-expression, and lifelong friendships. Like all women, I wear many hats. I am a full time mother, and a full time speech therapist. Capoeira I do for the love. It’s not “me” time it’s “we” time. For me, this art provides space in my life for family time, community involvement, and self-reflection. ~Zoe

It seems as though it was inevitable that Capoeira Angola would be the journey of my life. The music, dance, and flavors of my childhood were infused with Africa. In 1995 I met Mestre Jaime El Bey in Atlanta, GA. Who introduced me to the world of Capoeira. Mestre El Bey is my master, friend and mentor of many years. During my time with him in Atlanta, we became members of GCAP under Mestre Moraes. A few years later, I partnered in founding the first Capoeira Angola group in Houston, Tx which has been a part of the SHAPE community center since 1999. My years in capoeira have allowed me to visit many different communities of capoeira around the world, which brought diversity to my perspective, supported my growth as a human being and has been the catalyst for lasting friendships. In August 2016, I received the honor or being named contre mestre by a counsel of masters, making me one of very few Americans, and the first in Texas to hold this title. This recent accolade has been a great inspiration and has served to intensity my responsibility as an ambassador for my art. ~Marrio
